Pune: Time is of essence, more so in medical emergencies as it can save lives. This reminder of the power of immediate action was again evident at a mega health camp organised at Dhankawadi recently. Prompt action and CPR by Dr. Rohit Vyawahare, Senior Consultant Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Vishwaraj Hospital, Loni helped save the life of a 55 year old who collapsed at the venue .
Giving details Dr. Rohit Vyawahare, Senior Consultant Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Vishwaraj Hospital, Loni said that we had participated in a mega health camp along with several other medical institutions. While the camp was on, my team member drew my attention to a 55-year-old man who suddenly collapsed. Such situations call for immediate action as it can be a difference between life and death. Cardiac arrest can strike suddenly, and survival rates drop sharply with every passing minute. The best option in such cases is CPR as it helps keep blood and oxygen flowing to vital organs until advanced medical care is available.
Dr. Rohit swiftly took action and gave cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Within around eight minutes, the patient regained consciousness and his family took him for further treatment.
It should be noted that sudden cardiac arrest is different from heart attack. The time between cardiac arrest and medical assistance is absolutely critical, prompt action can reduce the risk of death as well as probable disability
“This incident is a powerful example of how timely CPR and immediate medical assistance can save lives, ” added Dr. Vyawahare. In this case a medical team was available, but such situations can arise anywhere, anytime. So it becomes all the more important that people at large should be trained for life saving skills like CPR and using AED machines.
