MPCB, Green Solutions lead plastic-free drive at Wakdewadi on World Environment Day
Pune: To mark World Environment Day, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) – Pune Regional Office – and Green Solutions jointly organised a public awareness and cleanliness drive at the Wakdewadi bus depot on Wednesday. The event focused on promoting plastic-free habits and mobilising citizens towards sustainable living practices.
The initiative saw participation from over 100 volunteers led by Sagar Ahiwale, Managing Director of Green Solutions. As part of the campaign, volunteers carried out a cleaning drive at the bus stand, collected plastic waste, and distributed cloth bags to commuters as an alternative to single-use plastics.
Officials from MPCB, including Regional Officer Babasaheb Kukade, Deputy Regional Officers Navnath Avatade and Kartikeya Langote, Zonal Director Prateek Bharane, Additional Director Shashikant Lokhande, and Nischal Shetty, were present at the event. Sanjay Walwe, depot manager, and Green Solutions’ Aarti Bhosale also attended.
A rally with banners promoting anti-plastic messages was held, during which participants took a collective pledge to reduce plastic usage. Volunteers performed a street play (nukkad natak) to sensitise the public on the environmental hazards of plastic waste. Tree plantation activities were also conducted as part of the event.
Speaking at the programme, Sagar Ahiwale said, “Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to our environment today. We must adopt small changes in our lifestyle by refusing single-use plastic and opting for eco-friendly alternatives. This campaign is a step in that direction.”
Officials noted that such initiatives are vital in spreading public awareness and aligning individual actions with the broader goal of environmental sustainability.
