Pune (Voice News Service): Sancheti Healthcare Academy (SHA), a renowned institute in Pune for the past 13 years, has a new feather in its hat. After the successful pilot project of Asia’s first Master’s programme in Expressive Movement Therapy (MA-EMT), the Academy now announces admissions for the second batch. This Master’s programme runs with a Memorandum of Understanding with Savitribai Phule Pune University. Although there are diploma and certification programmes in Dance Movement Therapy offered across India, including at SHA, this is the first Master’s degree focusing entirely on Dance/Expressive Movement Therapy.

Expressive Movement Therapy, also known internationally as Dance Movement Therapy is a creative art therapy that is getting increasingly established in mainstream healthcare in India. Rooted in psychology, this approach aims at the body-mind connection and offers physical and mental well-being to the individual and to the community.

With the vision to establish and provide the best possible education in EMT, The MA-EMT course at SHA is academically at par with the equivalent course offered in Western Universities. This meticulously designed programme offers an education otherwise availed abroad at a much lower cost. Additionally, being entirely curated in India, this course addresses the cultural dimension of working in an Indian context.

The MA-EMT curriculum covers the fundamental theories of Dance Movement Therapy while also offering an in-depth understanding of psychology and the application of EMT in various clinical and non-clinical settings. The MA-EMT is a two years hybrid programme with 4 semesters, involving internationally trained faculties from various disciplines, working extensively in the field of psychiatry, mental health and community welfare. Through theoretical and practical studies, internships and clinical supervision, students will gain the self-awareness required to integrate this unique skill set in their therapeutic practice. Students with this Master’s degree will be qualified to work with clinical populations in psychiatric hospitals with patients suffering from schizophrenia or personality disorders, rehabilitation centres for people with addiction or psychological illnesses, cancer hospitals and old age homes. They can also work in educational settings with mainstream children along with children with special needs.
