Pune’s First Hybrid Catheterisation Operating Theatre Launched at Ruby Hall Clinic

Hospital inaugurates surgically advanced cardiac suite featuring the Philips Azurion 7 C20

Pune (P&V News Service): Ever since its inception, Ruby Hall Clinic has been a leader in cardiac care and has offered pioneering solutions to cardiac ailments with the most advanced surgical techniques and equipment. Taking this a step forward, the hospital launched Punes first Hybrid Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory featuring the Philips Azurion 7 C20 at the hands of Mr. Gopal Nihalani and Dr Shirish (M.S.) Hiremath. This makes the it one of the handful of hospitals in the country to house such an advanced medical suite.

A hybrid operating room brings together advanced surgical facilities with the resources of a cardiac catheterisation lab and expanded imaging capabilities. The cath lab is where non-surgical, catheter-based procedures such as angiograms and angioplasties are performed by interventional cardiologists. The combined facilities of a hybrid operating room provide doctors with the ability to perform interventional and surgical procedures at the same time. With this approach, many heart disorders can be treated with far less risk of complications.

In the evolving world of cardiac care, we see a growing overlap among cases traditionally handled by surgeons, interventional cardiologists, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists and neuro-interventionalists and the hybrid cath lab offers streamlined and enhanced care for these patientsStandard cath labs aren’t equipped for opening a patient’s chest in an emergency situation, but this can be done in a hybrid setup. Conversely, surgical techniques could be used in the hybrid cath lab to manage complications, that can be repaired immediately as surgeons can perform bypass or life-saving cardiac surgery,” says Dr. C.N. Makhale, Cardiologist, Ruby Hall Clinic.

“Our Hybrid Catheterization Laboratory was built using the most advanced technology available, providing the safest environment for our patients to have their procedures. This fully digital system enables physicians to capture and view detailed images of a patient’s cardiac vasculature, thereby facilitating faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease. In essence, it allows us to discern the size of valves and will therefore be used for procedures such as TAVI, aortic stent graphs, end-vascular aneurysms or dissection repair and hybrid aortic procedures henceforth. Also important, the Philips Azurion system exposes patients and operators to less radiation during the actual procedures than many other available systems,” adds Dr. P.K. Grant, Chief Cardiologist and Managing Trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic.

“Heart disease is the number one killer in our community and the new Philips hybrid lab provides our patients with the most advanced cardiovascular care available. As our workhorse system, the new hybrid cath lab will allow for greater access to the patient and let multiple specialists work easily from either side of the table. As a result, this facility will ensure minimum hospitalisation time, faster procedures, reduced risk of complications, optimised cost and better outcomes overall,” emphasises Dr. Shirish (M.S.) HiremathDirector, Cath Lab, Ruby Hall Clinic.

“Time is truly of essence when the heart starts to fail; the time it requires to prep and move a patient to a surgical suite can sometimes be a matter of life and death. With the ability to operate right in the cath lab, surgeons are able to react quickly, which can drastically improve patient outcomes. Our hybrid cardiovascular programme is focused on the confluence of Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.” comments Dr. Manisha Karmarkar, COO, Ruby Hall Clinic.

“Setting the foundation of the future of cardiac care at the hospital, the new hybrid cath lab allows for rapid and tailored responses to unexpected complications and opens up a range of possibilities for improving patient care. As the field of cardiology advances to offer technologically enhanced treatment options for our heart patients, we continue to act as leaders in the advancement of this field,” concludes Mr. Bomi Bhote, CEO, Ruby Hall Clinic.

Ruby Hall Clinic’s Department of Cardiology has been at the forefront of care with state-of-the-art technology. With the region’s most prolific programmes such as cardiac arrhythmia, valve disease, vascular surgery, heart failure and heart transplant, the department has come to be celebrated internationally as a leader in all facets of cardiac care. Till date, the department has performed over 4 lakh angiographies, over 1 lakh angioplasties, more than 75,000 open heart surgeries as well as over 25 successful heart transplants.
