Indus Health Pus data reveals that Diabetes Mellitus and Prediabetes mellitus prevalence in Maharashtra is higher in males than females

 The incidents of DM amongst the male and female who had undergone the check-ups is 22% and 17% respectively

Pune (P&V News service): Indus Health Plus – a pioneer in preventive healthcare has observed diabetic trends based on the healthcare check-ups conducted. The observation is on Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and Pre-Diabetes Mellitus (PDM) in Maharashtra from the period Jan 2021 – Sept 2021. The trend reports that the incidences of DM in Males are higher than females in Maharashtra. The incidents of DM amongst the male and female who had undergone the check-ups is 22% and 17% respectively. Moreover, it is important to note that out of all, 36% of the people are prediabetes mellitus and at a high risk of diabetes.

Showing concern on the scenario, Mr. Amol Naikawadi, JMD & Preventive Healthcare Specialist, Indus Health Plus said, “Diabetes has become prevalent in Maharashtra, especially in males. The COVID-19 pandemic altered many facets of life. Regular health checkups and consultation also got impacted which has resulted in the increased number of prediabetes mellitus among people. People have been confined to their homes leading to sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity. Early diagnosis can help people in taking necessary measures. Diabetes is showing a rising trend across all age groups and hence, changes in lifestyle, regular exercise, and getting preventive health checkups at regular intervals will help reducing the burden of this epidemic disease.”

Key findings of the study based on check-ups: Sample Size: 10,000

  • Out of all the check-ups conducted, 22% of males and 17% of females are diabetic
  • Males are more prevalent to the disease than females
  • The major predisposing factors are stress, obesity, aerated drinks, alcohol consumption, junk food intake, no physical exercise and high sugar intake

Diabetes Mellitus (DM):

  • The overall incidences of the diabetes are 2000 (20%)
  • Out of all the incidences reported with DM, 57% are males and 43% are females
  • The following is the distribution (in %) of the males and females reported with borderline DM in Maharashtra:
    • Male: 37%, Females: 35%

Here are some recommendations to reduce the risk of Pre-Diabetes Mellitus:

Follow a low fat and sugar restricted diet 
Ensure adequate physical exercise 
Regular monitoring of blood sugar, lipid profile and blood pressure. 
Avoid smoking and alcohol 

Besides that, people are now aware of genetic testing to know about the risks pertaining to developing Diabetes. Considering this, Indus Health Plus also conducted a study based on 9000 genetic tests done in Maharashtra. The data showed that 20.8% have hereditary factors to develop type 2 diabetes.

Below are the suggested screening methods for cases that have been identified with high risk of Type2Diabetes.

  1. Fasting and post prandial blood sugars
  2. Oral glucose tolerance test
  3. Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test
  4. Random blood sugar test
  5. Physician consultation is recommended
