Diabetes and Obesity Reshaping the Cancer Landscape in India: Experts
Pune: The rising prevalence of obesity and diabetes is significantly increasing the risk of cancer in India. These conditions should no longer be viewed merely as lifestyle issues, addressing them has become more critical than ever., opined experts
Observed on 4 February, World Cancer Day serves as an important reminder of the growing burden of cancer, its increasing incidence among younger populations, and the urgent need for early screening and timely diagnosis.
Dr. Minish Jain, Senior Oncologist and Head of the Department of Oncology at Noble Hospitals and Research Centre, said that metabolic imbalances and chronic inflammation create an environment conducive for cancer cells. Obesity is a major risk factor and is currently associated with at least 13 different types of cancer. Insulin resistance further contributes to ongoing inflammation, increasing cancer risk.
He added that tumours tend to be more aggressive in obese patients or those with associated comorbidities, which also complicates cancer treatment. For instance, in obese patients, chemotherapy drugs may accumulate in fatty tissue and be released slowly over time, leading to increased toxicity. Determining the appropriate drug dosage can also be challenging, and reduced tolerance to treatment may adversely affect outcomes.
Dr. Jain added that obesity and diabetes must be viewed as more than lifestyle issues. Effective management through a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and sustained weight control can significantly reduce the risk of several diseases in future, including cancer.
Mental Fitness Plays a Crucial Role in Cancer Care
While advancements in diagnostics, deeper understanding of cancer biology, and improved treatment options have led to better outcomes, mental fitness remains equally important in the fight against cancer, Dr. Jain emphasized. A patient’s determination and mental resilience often play a decisive role in coping with the long-term demands of cancer treatment.
Fear surrounding cancer and surgical procedures is common, but with proper guidance and support, patients can better navigate these challenges. Recognizing this, psycho-oncology is increasingly gaining importance as an integral part of comprehensive cancer care, addressing the psychological and emotional well-being of patients alongside physical treatment.
