Pune (P&V News services) Indus Health Plus – a pioneer in preventive healthcare has observed trends related to heart health based on the healthcare check-ups conducted. The observation is on health checkups done in Pune from the period April 2020 – March 2021 where it is clearly shown that 41% males and 23% females have indicated abnormal results during coronary angiography of heart. The sample size of the study was 5,200 people.

Speaking on the health checkup data, Mr. Amol Naikawadi, JMD & Preventive Healthcare Specialist, Indus Health Plus said “The COVID-19 pandemic altered many facets of life. The checkups and consultation also got hindered in the process. But due to the impact on the health, people are now more concerned regarding their regular checkups to monitor their fitness on day-to-day basis and overall, wellbeing. This has resulted in the increase of testing and consultation. The recent data have suggested that certain comorbid situations like heart disease, rise in cholesterol, etc. are on rise because of sedentary lifestyle and inactivity.”

In addition, the data report suggests that 26% males and 26% females have cholesterol abnormalities, 37% males and 26% females have abnormal Triglycerides, and 37% males and 34% females have abnormal 2-D Echo cardiography. The outcome of the report depicts the need for an emphasis on early detection and lifestyle modifications across the country.

Due to the widespread of Covid-19 and implementation of social distancing norms, people remained confined in their homes for a long time which led to an increase in cases of NCDs and especially impacted heart health. The sedentary lifestyle, lack of access to healthcare and lack of physical activity resulted to the rise in the non-covid diseases. But, as the life around the world is going back to normal and due to covid awareness, there is an evident increase in the health checkups and regular screening.

Besides that, there has been an increase in awareness amongst people to know about genetic risks pertaining to certain heart related diseases. In light of this, Indus Health Plus also conducted a study based on 9000 genetic tests done in Maharashtra. The study showed that 23% people had a higher genetic risk for heart related disorder.
