Pune :In a remarkable instance of timely medical intervention and family support, a 34-year-old male patient underwent a successful living donor liver transplant within just 6 days of his first consultation. The complex procedure was led by Dr. Sharan Narute, Director and Chief of Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery.
The patient was admitted with symptoms including massive ascitic fluid accumulation, abdominal distention, bilateral lower limb swelling, and breathlessness. He also had a history of jaundice for the past eight months. After thorough diagnostic evaluations — including blood investigations and radiological scans — he was diagnosed with chronic liver disease, and an urgent liver transplant was identified as the only life-saving option.
The patient’s family responded with exceptional urgency. His spouse volunteered as a living donor without hesitation. Within three days, both the donor and recipient underwent complete medical workups, and all necessary legal formalities were completed in just one day.
The transplant surgery was performed successfully, and the entire process — from first consultation to surgery — was completed in just 6 days. The donor was discharged after 6 days, and the recipient after 9 days, both recovering well.
