Unrealistic Expectations & Guilt Lead Women to Extreme Decisions
Pune: “In Indian society, women often live under unrealistic expectations and a sense of guilt about themselves. This prevents them from expressing themselves openly. The constant burden and pressure of being unheard lead many women to suicidal thoughts” observed experts at a panel discussion.
Marking 20 years of ‘Connecting Trust,’ an organization dedicated to suicide prevention and emotional support, a seminar titled ‘Listening to the Voices of Women’ was organized. The event featured thought-provoking insights from Barkha Bajaj (Founder, AKS Foundation), Sister Lucy Kurien (Founder, ‘Maher’), Advocate Sandhya Deshpande, Transgender Rights Activist Kadambari Shaikh, and Senior Editor Corina Manuel. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Megha Deuskar, a sociologist.
Meher Padamji, Chairperson, Thermax Group& Arnavaz Damania, Founder & Managing Director of Connecting Trust, were present as the Chief Guest. Representatives from the Muskan Foundation and Stree Mukti Sanghatana, who shared their experiences
Kadambari Shaikh highlighted the complex struggles of transgender individuals, stating, “Our own families reject us first, followed by society, which forces us into a specific lifestyle. I have faced severe hardships, but I overcame them, earned two degrees, and built a career as a makeup artist. Yet, the pressure from family and society always imposes limitations.”
Sister Lucy Kurien shed light on the struggles of illiterate and semi-educated women, emphasizing that “They face greater helplessness and vulnerability.” Advocate Sandhya Deshpande spoke from a legal perspective, stating that helping oppressed women find their voice is a major challenge.
Barkha Bajaj pointed out that women experience higher emotional stress in relationships, often suppressing their feelings due to fear, shame, and societal judgment. Corina Manuel stressed the importance of creating a support system where women feel heard and understood.
Expressing gratitude, Arnavaz Damania acknowledged the dedication and perseverance of the team at Connecting Trust, stating that “Being a woman is a challenging journey, and the organization’s work for the past 20 years has been possible only because of our team’s commitment and empathy.”
“When society truly listens to women, their potential reaches new heights.” – Meher Padamji. She emphasized that for centuries, women’s voices have been suppressed, often leading to suicidal tendencies due to emotional suppression. She stated, “Providing women with the space to express themselves is crucial. The act of listening is essential for survival, and organizations like ‘Connecting Trust’ offer that much-needed platform.”
