Education in Innovation and Innovation in Education will be the way forward: Dr Raghunath Mashelkar

Pune (Voice News Service): Amidst the swift global changes, our actions, and higher education curricula must adapt promptly to the evolving time. Eminent Scientist and Former Director General-CSIR, Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, expressed his views at the Ajeenkya DY Patil University & Youth20 (an official engagement of G20) Youth Festival.

He emphasized, “’Education in Innovation’ and ‘Innovation in Education’ will serve as the currencies of tomorrow while advocating for borderless disciplines in science and engineering. He expressed his ideas on ‘Innovation in Education’ in an electrifying fireside chat with Prof Hrridaysh Deshpande, Vice Chancellor, Ajeenkya DY Patil University.

During his freewheeling conversation, Dr Mashelkar firmly focused on innovation revolving around distinctly approaching things, making a meaningful impact, and uncovering new solutions. In times ahead, solution Engineering will emerge as the most advanced branch of engineering in the coming years. We seek solutions because there is a problem. Hence, the role of universities shall be of utmost importance in creating a mindset of teaching students how to discover solutions for all types of problem-solving. It is all about bringing diverse disciplines together.

He further added, “ Universities need to explore the new-age skills to develop in our students. Accumulating knowledge alone is inadequate, learning by doing is substantial, but equally more important is learning by creating and co-creating is equally important. During this learning by doing process, we must ensure inclusion and equal opportunity for everybody to access quality education.

He emphasized. “Currently, we educate students for the jobs that exist in the present. However, as stakeholders in the education system, it is essential to comprehend the future job landscape and the skills that will be in demand. Students must therefore be encouraged to develop a wide range of fundamental skills, such as managing complexity and uncertainty, promoting creativity and emotional intelligence, and honing critical thinking skills.

Dr Mashelkar ended on a high note that emotional engineering and co-creation will be necessary in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous world, for which he termed VUCA the new normal.
