Pune: In a historic breakthrough for Indian medical science, DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune has successfully performed the nation’s first simultaneous heart transplant and redo kidney transplant on a 60-year-old patient. This complex, life-saving procedure represents a new benchmark in multi-organ transplantation.
The patient, who had received a kidney transplant in 2001 due to chronic renal failure, suffered graft failure in 2024. His condition was further complicated by dilated cardiomyopathy, resulting in advanced heart failure. Dependent on maintenance dialysis and multiple medications, he approached DPU Super Specialty Hospital in search of a viable treatment option.
Following a comprehensive evaluation by the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), the case was accepted after careful discussion of the high risks and intricate challenges involved. On June 10, 2025, the patient underwent a simultaneous heart and repeat kidney transplant, made possible through an in-house organ donor.
The surgery itself was uneventful, thanks to the skilled execution by DPU Super Specialty’s elite transplant teams. However, the postoperative phase was intensely demanding, as the integration and management of two newly transplanted organs, each with different immunosuppressive needs, required extraordinary coordination and clinical vigilance.
Daily multidisciplinary team meetings enabled synchronized care plans, constant monitoring, and swift response to dynamic clinical needs. Today, the patient is stable and continues to recover under the care of the DPU transplant unit.
Speaking about the achievement, Hon’ble Dr. P. D. Patil, Chancellor, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth Pimpri, Pune, said, “This achievement is a testament to our unwavering commitment to advancing medical science and patient care.
