Noble Hospital celebrates fifth birthday of child who was born extreme pre-mature

Uniqueness of this case lies in Intact survival and the child being developmentally normal

Pune: Noble Hospitals recently celebrated the fifth birthday of an extreme pre-mature born child. One of the most preterm births/ smallest gestational births in South East Pune, the child’s intact survival and being developmentally normal is something unique.

Dr.Anil Khamkar, Academic Head & Senior Consultant – NICU at Noble Hospitals  said that the baby boy was born in the 24th week (5.5 months) of pregnancy commonly referred to as extreme premature born and weighed only 530 gm at birth. While advancement in science and medical care has ensured the survival of pre- mature babies, such babies are often associated with some or other morbidity and do require therapies like speech or occupational therapies. They are also at the risk of IVH (Intraventricular haemorrhage- bleeding in the brain. The risk of IVH increases with the degree of prematurity, as the brain’s blood vessels are not yet fully developed and are very fragile).

In this case the baby did not have IVH, no infection throughout NICU stay, neither were any antibiotics given. The baby was given kangaroo care in rotation by mother and his father. Dr.Khamkar said that we followed strict asepsis protocols of Noble Hospital NICU which ensured the baby didn’t have infection throughout the NICU stay.

Dr.PD Pote Paediatrician at Noble Hospitals said that one of the important features was also ensuring excellent nutrition . With good nutrition and supportive care we could achieve normal growth and development of the baby during NICU stay and afterwards which one would expect if baby is in mothers’ womb. When the baby was not in a position to have milk, Total Parental Nutrition ( TPN) was given. This was followed by giving him human milk which helped the baby gain weight and become healthy.

Dr Abhay Mahindre, Head of Administration and Director NICU said that, Total Parental Nutrition is a method of providing nutrition to sick babies that provides nutrients directly into the bloodstream through a vein.

Dr. Khamkar added that the intact survival of the baby ( no morbidities, infections despite baby requiring ventilator support and though baby was very sick) and being developmentally normal is something unique and we are extremely happy that our strict protocols and expert care played a part in this.

We are  proud to have a team of NICU doctors, nurses and support staff who are proactive and dedicated to meet the highest standard for better patient outcomes.said Dr Divij Mane, Director Noble Hospital and research centre. We congratulate the NICU team  who followed strict protocols  With JCI Gold Seal which is the highest accolade for a hospital worldwide for Healthcare Quality and Excellence, Noble Team meets the highest standards in the world.
