Need to combat myths, misconceptions and misinformation about sexual problems with awareness and education

Pune: Issues related to sexual health are born out of myths, misconceptions and misinformation and  bring tremendous anxiety. There is a need to combat them with education and awareness opined various experts. 40th Annual Conference of the Council of Sex Education and Parenthood International (CSEPI) was inaugurated today at PYC Gymkhana with over 250 leading experts in the field of human sexuality to discuss the theme: “Sexuality in the Digital Era: Pitfalls and Benefits.” 

Renowned Actor  Dr. Mohan Agashe, Dr. Alka Deshpande Former Incharge of ART Centre JJ Hospital and social worker, Dr. Prakash Kothari renowned Sexologist along with Prof. Dr. G. Venkata Ramana, Chairperson of CSEPI, Prof. Dr. D. Narayana Reddy, Dr. Vinky Rughwani, Administrator Maharashtra Medical Council,  Dr. Rajendra Sathe, Pune’s senior and renowned sexologist and the Organizing Chairperson of the conference, Dr. Amit Mutha, Consultant in Sexual Medicine and Andrology and Organizing Secretary of CSEPI 2024 and other dignitaries were present at the inauguration .

Life time achievement award was conferred on. Prof. Dr. G. Venkata Ramana,and Dr. Sanjay Deshpande for their contribution to this field.

Dr Prakash Kothari said that any case, organic or psychological that goes to the physician, you will find one thing in common that there is a tremendous anxiety over sexual situation which is usually brought about by negative feelings, resulting in an experience of failure and a viscous cycle gets sets up in which hostility, fear, guilt become a part. This particular anxiety in our country is born out of myths, misconceptions and misinformation. We should combat these by awareness.

Dr Alka Deshpande said that there should more awareness and we should take sex education to the community. Medical professionals should also be aware of what is going on in the digital world to understand and address various challenges.

Dr. Rajendra Sathe, Pune’s senior and renowned sexologist and the Organizing Chairperson of the conference, stated that the chosen theme is particularly relevant in today’s internet-driven world. “We are living in an age where digital platforms play a pivotal role in shaping human sexuality. The conference will provide a platform to delve into the opportunities and challenges presented by this digital landscape,” he said. The event features orations, keynote addresses, panel discussions, workshops, and presentations, covering a broad range of topics in the field of sexology.

Dr. Amit Mutha, Consultant in Sexual Medicine and Andrology and Organizing Secretary of CSEPI 2024, added that “We aim to address both the challenges and the opportunities presented by the digital world, particularly in terms of sexual health and well-being,”

Prof. Dr. D. Narayana Reddy, Chairperson Emeritus of CSEPI, emphasized the risks posed by the digital world. “While digital technologies have undoubtedly made our lives more convenient, they have also introduced dangers, such as easy access to pornography and misleading information. These can foster unhealthy behaviors that threaten societal well-being,” he warned.

Prof. Dr. G. Venkata Ramana, Chairperson of CSEPI, highlighted how digital technologies have reshaped the way people express their sexuality, seek information, and form relationships. “From online dating platforms to social media, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, the digital world has revolutionized sexual expression. Our goal at this conference is not only to identify the potential risks but also to explore the benefits and opportunities these technologies present. By fostering a deeper understanding , we aim to better navigate this complex landscape and use technology to promote sexual well-being,” Dr. Ramana remarked.

The Council of Sex Education and Parenthood International was established in March 1982, with its first national conference held in Mumbai that same year. Initially known as the International Council of Sex Education and Parenthood, the organization was renamed in 1991. Over the years, CSEPI is now become pan India as it has grown into India’s leading sexual health organization, currently boasting a large number of fellows and members.

The council was founded by the eminent sexologist and newspaper columnist Late Dr. Mahinder Watsa, along with prominent figures such as Dr. R.H. Dastur, Dr. C.L. Jhaveri, Mrs. Sarla Mukhi, Dr. Esther Dubey, Dr. Vitthal Prabhu, and Dr. Raj Brahmbhatt.
