Team of Doctors at PBMA’s H.V Desai Eye Hospital conduct Corneo- Scleral tear suturing to restore vision of 3 construction workers

Pune (Voice news service):- A team of doctors at PBMA’s H.V Desai Eye Hospital conducted a complex Corneo- Scleral tear suturing to restore vision of three construction workers. Two workers had sustained eye injuries at construction site by iron nails, while the third one had sustained injuries while operating grinding machine . The team of doctors was led by Dr. Shilpa Joshi Head of the Cornea Department and Eye Bank Director at H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, and included Cornea Consultants Dr. Snehal Ghadge and Dr. Pooja Aandhare . The workers all in their early twenties from North India had come to the hospital in a span of an hour with their supervisor.

Explaining the case Dr. Shilpa Joshi said that the construction workers had suffered eye injuries caused during construction work. These are traumatic as small metal particles and burrs can hit the eye with high velocity causing serious damage to the cornea. All of them had injuries on their right eye. They were taken for Slit Lamp examination which assesses the tear length and extent of damage.

Dr Joshi said that there are two parts of diagnosis one is X Ray or CT scan to see whether the particles have gone inside the eye, but that is done later but what is urgent is repairing the wound. Immediately after the diagnosis they were taken to the operation theatre to conduct Corneo- Scleral tear suturing.

Corneo-scleral tear suturing is a delicate surgical procedure used to repair severe eye injuries involving lacerations to both the cornea and the sclera (the white part of the eye). It requires precise techniques such as careful tissue repositioning and the use of fine sutures to restore the integrity of the globe, achieve a watertight closure, and reduce the risk of infection. Proper suturing is essential because such wounds are often irregular and require skilled, experienced surgeons. At the same time, experienced surgeons can assess whether any secondary procedures, such as cataract surgery or keratoplasty, are needed. In this case the Corneo- Scleral tear suturing required around three hours.

Two of the patients are doing quite well, as their injuries were peripheral and outside the visual axis. They will require follow-up to monitor for infection, and suture removal will be performed after 6–8 weeks. After that, glasses or contact lenses may be required to improve vision. The third patient sustained an injury to the central cornea and may require keratoplasty surgery in the future. .

Eye Trauma is an absolute emergency, such patients should be immediately brought to tertiary care eye hospitals, for proper management, as many of them require a multidisciplinary approach for optimal treatment, added Dr. Joshi . Timely treatment is essential as delay can increase the risk of eye infections and further complications .

Booming cities like Pune will always have ongoing construction work and there is a need for better awareness about onsite eye safety. Typically these are young men from other states, who have come to work here. Needless to say, they are very poor, neither have insurance, nor necessary documents to get benefit from the state’s health scheme (MJPJY) .

Dr.Rahul Deshpande, Chief Medical Director, PBMA’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital said we commend the multidisciplinary efforts that helped restore vision in these young men, who are in their early twenties and have their whole life ahead of them. Along with the medical experts, the support staff acted swiftly to process documentation under the MPJAY scheme and coordinated for funding through charity for the third youngster who lacked the necessary papers. With state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, skilled doctors managing such complex cases on a daily basis, and the coordinated, prompt efforts of the support staff, the hospital is able to ensure timely and optimal outcomes for patients in urgent need of medical care.
