62-year-old male suffering from rare multiple ventricular tachycardia undergoes coronary angioplasty at Manipal Hospitals Baner

Pune (Voice News Servie): In a recent case, a 62-year-old Diabetic man from Ratnagiri was successfully treated for multiple episodes of ventricular tachycardia due to a massive heart attack, with coronary angioplasty at Manipal Hospitals, Baner- Pune. The patient was admitted to a local hospital after complaints of palpitation (abnormal sensation of heart beat). An ECG revealed that it was an episode of ventricular tachycardia, and so he was referred to Manipal Hospitals, Baner for further evaluation and treatment as a higher center of Cardiac care.

The patient reached the hospital in a critical condition and, upon performing echocardiography, it was revealed that his cardiac pumping function was severely reduced to about 30-35%. Additionally, coronary angiography revealed that one of his arteries was 100% blocked due to a large blood clot. Furthermore, the patient’s condition started deteriorating as he had stopped responding to high potency drugs, further complicating the situation. He was given a DC shock (electric shock) for cardioversion. After settling his heartbeat, the hospitals full time dedicated Cardiology team led by Dr. Abhijit Joshi and Dr. Dhananjay Zutshi performed coronary angiography and angioplasty which proved lifesaving from cardiac arrest.

Addressing the challenge in this case, Dr. Abhijit Joshi, Consultant, Cardiology, Manipal Hospitals, Baner- Pune said, “The patient had undergone angioplasty in one of his arteries in 2013, after which he was leading a healthy lifestyle, however he still suffered another heart attack, for which angioplasty was needed. Post the procedure he was put on intra-aortic balloon support for maintaining his blood pressure, and also mechanical ventilation for breathing support. With the strong will of the patient, the critical care team and cardiology team ensured that he was slowly tapered off from all the life-saving support including drugs, ventilator, and intra-aortic balloon pump and he responded well to the treatment. In just 3days of ICU care he was shifted to the ward and discharged in a stable condition.”

Dr. Abhijit Joshi explained that,  “Ventricular tachycardia is an abnormal rhythm of heart beat, in which the heart starts beating at a very fast rate, nearly 200 times per minute, which increases the risk of sudden death due to cardiac arrest. It is usually caused because of or as a result of a complication of heart attack or a previous heart attack. This patient suffered from multiple episodes of this serious condition which is known as ‘electrical storm’ which increased the risk and complexity of managing the case.

“Management of such serious cases require well-coordinated team of cardiologists, anesthetists, critical care team intensivists, cath lab technical and para-medical staff along with high end Cath Lab technology which all came together to successfully to save the life of the patient. At Manipal Hospitals, Baner, we are well prepared to handle any situation of emergency and provide our patients with the best-in-class treatment by completely dedicated full-time hospital based consultants of every specialty and superspeciality. “said Dr.Viju Rajan, Hospital Director.
