Pune: A team of doctors at Lokmanya Hospitals led by renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Narendra Vaidya along with Dr, Satish Kale, Dr. Rakesh Patil and in presence and participation of renowned Texas orthopaedic surgeon Dr.Ugo N Lhekweazu successfully conducted a \u2018Uni Compartmental Arthroplasty \u2018using advanced VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution on a 67 year old male patient suffering from bi-lateral knee pain .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Giving details about the case, Dr. Narendra Vaidya, Chairman and Chief Robotic Surgeon, Lokmanya Hospitals said that the patient was suffering from bi-lateral knee pain from last three years. On careful examination it was found that he had grade 4 arthritis, but pertaining only to inner (medial) side of the knee. In such cases it is possible to avoid total knee replacement, as partial knee replacement is a better option which only changes the part of the joint which is damaged, in this case, the inner compartment of the knee. Normal knee has three compartments. So instead of changing all the three compartments, only the damaged one is changed or replaced with artificial component. In this resurfacing surgery as it should be called, only the cartilage which is worn off is replaced and no ligaments are cut. Only few mm of bones is resurfaced using this technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As far as partial knee replacements are concerned, the accuracy is a great challenge in conventional methods, added Dr. Vaidya. According to global literature the accuracy rate is 70% . This means the rest may not have accurate alignment and may experience persistent pain or early failures. To avoid this, we can now use the fourth generation Velys Robot in which, without doing a CT scan or MRI, we can accurately replace the affected compartment of the knee. This is extremely useful for the patient as we retain all four ligaments and normal structures of the knee and so the patient gets complete function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Vaidya said that the procedure took twenty minutes on each knee and in both the knee joints only the inner or medial compartment was replaced using this technology. The patient was made to walk immediately the next day and in two days, the patient could go home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to global statistics, the technology helps with much better survival rates, with 96% of the joints functioning very well beyond 20 years. The accuracy of implantation is the key determinant of success in partial knee replacement and in this technology the surgeon can plan the correct placement of implant in all the three planes<\/strong> which is difficult in conventional knee replacements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So this technology is a boon for those going for partial knee replacement with patients having one compartment arthritis as we are able to spare all the bones and ligaments said Dr. Vaidya. This technology can be of immense help across ages as the risk involved are minimal, good survival rate of implants and result in lesser risk of infection and other complications like Deep Vein Thrombosis. We have also been using this technology for total knee replacement for last four years with extremely good results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The advantage of Velys Robotic System is that it is completely real time system and does not require any CT Scan or MRI and thus avoids additional radiation like other robotic systems.
